How to Eat Healthy Food During Your Holidays

A trip abroad is always exciting, full of new things to see and new places to discover. Such a vacation will always change your lifestyle, at least a bit. You wake up and go to bed at different hours, eat at different places and, often, exercise more than in your everyday life. You will walk around, even for hours, seeing new places and strolling here and there. You might climb long stairs to see monuments, reach the top of hills or even mountains, follow rivers and cross the countryside once and again.

Even if the holidays are a time to regain your energies, it can be also very tyring and very challenging when it comes to eating habits. You will probably consume more calories and need more vitamins, especially if you’ve chosen an active schedule. At the same time, your diet might go a little worse. Eating at restaurants is one thing, but if you go camping or for day-long trips you might carry some sandwiches with you and that would be it, and that’s not very nutritive! Also, and especially if you have kids, you might eat more fast food or sweets, because "it’s a holiday!" and it’s a time to relax and enjoy. Be careful, though! You may not make the best food choices when on a holiday. Let´s see how you can take care of your diet when traveling abroad.

Keeping an eye on what you eat

You need to eat healthily and keep a balance diet all year round, and your holidays are no exception. Even if they’re just a few days and it’s not the end of the world if you slip a bit on your diet, it is always better to keep it together, at least as much as possible. Going abroad does have its challenges at many levels, and one of them is food. Meals in a different culture can be strange to you, and - once again, especially if you have children - it can be a little uncomfortable to eat something you’re not familiar with. Even the same ingredients you’re used to may be cooked in completely different ways in another country.

For this reason, it isn’t unusual that people end up eating a bit too much fast food when abroad, or at least narrowing down their meal choices to just a handful they feel comfortable with. However, you must find a way to keep your diet varied and balanced. Good nutrition equals more energy and a better health for your trip abroad!

It can be a lot of fun to try new dishes, and some people actually love tasting new food or recipes. Some even travel for the sole purpose of eating exotic or different food! For example, those planning a trip to France may want to try French cuisine. When you travel abroad, take this chance to try some of their local recipes. You might end up finding a new favorite to add to your menu!

Eat homemade food with locals

A good alternative to fast food and questionable food you’ll find on the street is to look for places where you can eat homemade food. These dishes often have little to no additives and are very natural. And we love homemade food! Not only is it varied and balanced, but also it’s made with passion and care and you can have a beautiful experience sharing it with other people. It feeds both your stomach and your heart!

It might be bit difficult for you to find homemade food abroad, especially if you don’t have family or friends there to invite you over for dinner. However, there are still some ways to get this kind of meal. To continue our example about France, if you want to eat with French locals , there are family restaurants and French hosts that offer homemade food, either for eating on place or to take for later.

If you take some time to look around and search for options, you will find surprising offers for homemade food or healthy food abroad. You can visit Guest in the City, a wonderful site that connects French families willing to share their meals with foreigners for a low fee, with travelers looking for an authentic French family experience with a homemade traditional meal included! In fact, Guest in the City connects visitors with French locals for meals, rooms, guided tours and other authentic activities.

Finally, if you want to blend in and eat like locals while on holidays, there are a number of sites and articles to check. For example, you will find more information about eating like a Parisian in this great article from the Huffington Post. As you can see, the sky is the limit, and you have plenty of choices for a nice and healthy meal abroad, wherever you go.  Just remember to keep a balance diet, eat at reliable places and not to recur too much to easy ways out like fast food. Once or twice it’s okay, but don’t let your holidays take health away from you!
